A field of Eulophia angolensis in flower on the farm in White River

To celebrate almost fifty years of orchid growing, we bring you our own web site. May this be as enjoyable and rewarding experience to you as growing and hybridising orchids has been to us.

Starting as a hobby, first in Nelspruit and then Pretoria and expanding in the accommodating weather of White River, Van Rooyen Orchids has grown into a substantial orchid nursery

Roelie van Rooyen (a retired eye-surgeon) and his wife Angela are international judges and have travelled extensively. Their interest in orchids has brought them many wonderful friends all over the world

In 1987 their son-in-law and daughter, Sieg and Linet Hamman, joined the ranks. Six dedicated nursery workers complete the team.

During our frequent travels we have managed to bring back many famous stud plants to use in our hybridising program

We endeavour to have a variety of species and hybrids of different genera available. Plants from Van Rooyen Orchids have received numerous quality awards over the past years. We are especially proud that many of these were won by our own seedlings ‘born and bred’ in our laboratory in White River.

You will notice that nearly all the plants listed are flowering size. Some of these are not usually available but as we have been growing them for many years, we are now able to sell divisions at a reasonable price.

Our seedling house and laboratory is bulging with many new interesting crosses. There is also a large selection of species, including some recently discovered ones, which we intend to add to our list.

All the catalogue plants, and many more, are available at our orchid nursery just outside White River.

Since the late 1970's  Roelie van Rooyen has been very busy in the Lab producing a variety of different offspring. This can be seen in the almost 2000 seedpods sown in the Van Rooyen Lab up to 2003. As is always the case not all of these crosses have germinated and some don't make it further than the seedling table. Some have been a roaring success and others quite disappointing, but all-in-all this has been a very worth wile learning experience. Up to this day Van Rooyen Orchids is still producing new seedlings each year. Some of these are selfings or siblings of specially selected species while others are brand new hybrids. It has taken some time to go through all the old records (and a few missing ones that still haven't turned up), to try and start a small data base of crosses made at Van Rooyen Orchids. Following is the first draft of hybrids made at Van Rooyen orchids with information available at this time.
